The spaceplane takes off from the equator, flies eastward and skips between the upper atmosphere and space. At the hight of the arc it tips over and goes back down. It turns upwards again when it reaches the atmosphere. It gains speed in the light air and the vacumn. Each skip takes it higher, faster and further. The orbital manoeuvers take 2 hours to complete and the aircraft travels 12000 miles. It uses ordinary jet fuel and liquid oxygen.

A really functional spaceship should be big. It should weigh a million tons. It would have to be a seaplane. Chemical engines can't provide enough range, so the spaceship would have to be nuclear powered. Presently there's isn't a mechanical device to convert nuclear energy into usable thrust. It would have to be invented.

An asteroid could be destoyed with high speed shot. The shot could have a speed of 100,000 MPH and weighs 10.000 tons. A spaceship could carry and launch them..
There could be a fleet of asteroid destroyers. They could take off from onc of the moons that circle Mars., accelerate to a halfway point between, and brake the rest of the way. They could reach the asteroid in a few days.
The missiles are fired one at a time from a point several hundred miles behind the asteroid. This distance is necessary to give the rocket propelled shot time to speed up.
The propellant is used up in a few seconds. The shot has 2 gyro stabilizers, one on the top and one on the side. Each of the gyro stabilizers has a gear that fits into one of 2 gears that run the length of the barrel. As the shot is fired the gears engage and the gyro stabilizers are set in motion.
There's a problem with blowback. Some of it will reach the ship. For that reason the asteroid destroyer is armored and reinforced. It shaped much like a submarine.
